Mr David Lunt
David qualified from Newcastle Medical School in 2009. He completed his ophthalmic training in the North East, rotating to all local hospitals with eye departments including Darlington, Durham, Bishop Auckland, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Sunderland.
Following this he was recruited onto the esteemed Clinical Glaucoma Fellowship in Moorfields Eye hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, working closely with world-leading visionaries in the field of Glaucoma. Here, he learned innovative surgical techniques and approaches to outpatient care, contributed to landmark Glaucoma trials, and co-authored the Glaucoma Chapter in the Moorfields Manual of Ophthalmology, an internationally recognised book used by training ophthalmologists the world over. The local population are already benefitting from his expertise this in his current role as the Glaucoma Service Lead in South Tees NHS Foundation Trust.
Expertise
His clinical expertise includes assessing patients who have been told they may have a risk of developing glaucoma, right through to managing advanced cases who have already lost portions of their vision and are rightly concerned that every clinical decision is critical. He is adept at all forms of glaucoma laser including iridotomy and selective laser trabeculoplasty, which has recently been recognised as a first line treatment for the most common form of glaucoma in the 2022 national guidelines. He performs a variety of minimally invasive glaucoma surgical techniques (MIGS), and has been asked to present his surgical success and tips on a national level. He is also proficient at more traditional glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy, aqueous shunt surgery). He performs more than 200 glaucoma procedures per year. He is also an accomplished cataract surgeon and successfully performs over a thousand cataract extractions with vision restoring lens implants per year.
Medical and patient education is David’s true passion second only to his clinical work. David has published several book chapters on Ophthalmology and Glaucoma, and has contributed to a number of important research studies in all of the hospitals he has worked at previously and currently. He is an Educational Supervisor and Royal College of Ophthalmologist approved College Tutor. He is currently mentoring several allied healthcare professionals through university degrees to accelerate their career progression. He works closely with the charity Glaucoma UK, and holds a position on their Clinical Advisory Panel. He passionately believes patient communication is the cornerstone of successful management of the individual with glaucoma, through engagement and mutual understanding between the clinician, the patient and their loved ones.
